GCA Lady Lions Announce Michael Couey as New Head Basketball Coach

FRANKLIN, TN (July 17, 2020) – Former CPA associate head basketball coach, Michael Couey, has been named Grace Christian Academy’s high school girls head basketball Coach, announced on Friday by GCA Director of Athletics, Len McKnatt.

“We are very excited that Michael, his wife Diana, and their three girls will be joining us at Grace Christian Academy,” said McKnatt. “Coach Couey has been around the game of basketball his entire life. He will bring a wealth of knowledge, passion and energy to the girls program. He and his wife will be great Christian mentors for our girls and our entire school community.”

With an extensive coaching resume that includes serving as varsity boys head coach for multiple high school programs, he spent several years as associate head coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy with an overall record of 208-39. With Couey on the sideline, CPA’s highlights include numerous state and regional championships.

As a skilled coach and committed mentor, Couey is the Founder and Director of the Elite Amateur Basketball Club of Tennessee (EAB), a 501c3 non-profit for boys and girls with over 400 families involved statewide. The organization comprises 30+ boys teams and 10+ girls teams ranging from 2nd-11th grade with locations in Knoxville, Nashville, Murfreesboro and Memphis.

“We are so humbled and grateful for the opportunity Mr. Robbie Mason, Mr. Richard Anderson, and Coach Len McKnatt have extended for us to join the GCA family,” said Couey. “We are excited to watch our three girls grow up in a community that not only offers a superb education, but also integrates faith into their everyday life. Whether the classroom or the court, the GCA girls basketball program will pursue excellence in all that we do.”

A 2001 Belmont University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, Couey was a three year starter on the Belmont Men’s Basketball team, and played in the first Division 1 basketball game in the school’s history.

Couey brings his decorated basketball career to the GCA Lions after spending last season as the associate head coach and assistant athletic director at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy, helping lead them to be the 2020 NACA Division 1 National Champions with the highest national ranking in the school’s history.
